What We Do

A training program developed by notable artists and renowned professionals.

Harvesting Passion, Producing Results.

— what we do —

Kanyok Arts Initiative is an intimate New York City training program that bridges aspiring artists from the studio to the professional stage through a re-imagined diverse curriculum in a nurturing environment. We strive to foster an incredibly open environment at our studio and empower the students to take an active role in their dance education by asking questions, and learning how to express themselves.

My daughter joined Kanyok Arts Initiative in September of 2019 through a friend who recommended the program. In the few short months, I have noticed a change in my daughter both mentally and physically. If you researched the program online, you can clearly see the dance faculty is remarkable. If dance training is what you’re looking for, KAI clearly has the faculty which will give any dancer a top notch, well rounded dance training. The program offers a variety of classic disciplines with faculty currently working in the industry. The one thing that sets KAI aside from all other programs is Laurie Kanyok.  Laurie changed my daughter’s life, made her a more confident dancer, and at the same time has pushed her to excel in her training. The added on bonus is that my daughter feels like she is a part of her family.  KAI has the best of both worlds, top notch dance education and most importantly, is an environment that nurtures young minds.

— From our Director —

I realized early on, my passion for performing wasn’t a choice, it was in my genetic makeup. My origins as a dancer/performer were very different from what exists today, we didn’t have social media as a platform to promote our craft. We had a room with a floor, barres, mirrors and music. I was fortunate to enjoy a successful career performing coming from that background, and have reinvented myself within this industry as I evolved. I recognize the benefits of today’s virtual society and feel the perfect recipe could possibly be a little bit of that plus a little bit of this!

I started KAI when I felt compelled to share wisdom I learned from others as well as from my professional experiences. Discipline, integrity and commitment were critical values instilled in me as a maturing dancer from my earliest teachers and later mentors. Technical training is a key component of success, it is useful in all facets of life. If we remain true to these values, we will learn from each other, expand our horizons, and continue to grow.

Perfection is a fool’s errand. We strive for excellence.

Warmly,
Laurie, founder and director of Kanyok Arts Initiative
